It has been argued that the best fiction draws on real life, and while the jury may still be out on that assertion, Peter Rake is making a compelling case for the affirmative. ‘The Awakening’ is a delightful meander through the inner thoughts of a young farm hand who, working in solitude in Outback Queensland, finds himself contemplating life in a way that is only possible in such a place.
The character is one that stays with the reader long after the last page has been turned. A kind and thoughtful young man, the main protagonist journeys with the landscape around him; the day and the night; his free thinking and his logic.
