The Amazon Kindle best selling Outback romance novel by Peter Rake, ‘The Outback Story: The Loves and Adventures of ‘Tiger’ Williams’, is now available on Kobo. To celebrate, here’s an excerpt …
“Instead of staying in Isisford,” Alan spoke to Steve in a quiet moment. “How about you and me go over to Longreach for the weekend?”
“Yeah! Why not,” Steve liked the idea, “We can drop the others off in town and head over in my ute.”
“No offense mate, but I have already spoken to McLennan and he offered me the Land Rover … what do you reckon?”
“I’ll have to take Freda, that’s all I was thinking.” Steve wasn’t going to leave his other mate here alone, it didn’t seem right to the lad.
“No problem with that … and another thing … I was thinking of going out to my Dad’s place. He always keeps a well stocked fridg’, and it’s free,” Alan was trying Steve out.
“Aw, I dunno,” Steve said uneasily. Steve didn’t feel comfortable with the idea of meeting Alan’s parents, not because he had any real reason, but because the thoughts of his own mother and father came flooding back to him, and he feared that family connections would stir up his need to contact his own family.
Steve had left home in a much-agitated state. His mother was still trying to control him like he was a little kid and Steve, at sixteen, was all grown up, so he thought.
“If you leave this place I will get the police on to you,” she had said.
So entrenched was this threat in Steve’s mind that he never though about the fact that he was now nineteen and not still the sixteen year old that had left home.
“I’m inviting you to our place, not because I like you or anything, it’s because I want some back-up to keep my parents from complaining about me not working there, that’s all.”
Steve gave the invitation some thought, he considered that if he did feel like contacting his parents it would not be such a bad idea anyway.
“Yeah, all right, mate. If you’ re such a sook, I guess I’ll have to look after you, hey!?”
“I’ll give you … bloody sook!” Alan laughed.
